Callers trying to bully social security recipients.

The scam: Telemarketing scam.

The targets: Social security recipients.

How the scam works: Telemarketing scam artisits will telephone the elderly and tell them that they are due for an increase in their social security payments. The telemarketer tells the person that they are making sure the recipient's social security number and bank account numbers are correct before any increase can take place. These callers will try to pressure the social security recipient into giving them that information.

How to avoid becoming a victim:  Never give out your personal information over the phone. It's okay to be rude, don't be afraid to just hang up the phone on these callers.

Report any suspicious offers or scams to the Hitchcock County Sheriff's Office @ 308-334-5444, the Consumer Response Center @ 1-877-382-4357 or the Nebraska Attorney General's Office @ 1-800-727-6432.
