Press Release


On April 27, 2016, at 3:36 A.M., the Hitchcock County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to 223 West 5th Street, Trenton, Nebraska, regarding a shooting that had occured at that residence. When the Sheriff's Office arrived they discovered outside the residence, one adult male with a single self-inflicted gunshot to the side of the head who was identified as Robert G. Lawing, age 49, of 201 East 2nd Street, Trenton, Nebraska. Additionally, it was discovered inside the residence another adult male with a gunshot wound to the lower jaw who was identified as James E. Baxter, age 58. The residence was cleared by the Sheriff's Office and both subjects were pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation determined that Robert E. Lawing entered the residence killed James Baxter and then walked outside and shot himself with a .22 caliber handgun that had been stolen from an acquaintance on April 26, 2016.

Press Release


The Hitchcock County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into an apparent murder-suicide, which was reported during the early morning hours of April 27, 2016, in the 200 Block of West 5th Street, Trenton, Nebraska. The names of the two adult male victims will not be released at this time, pending death notifications to the family members. Autopsies have been scheduled for this coming Thursday with the Central Nebraska Forensics Center in Gibbon, Nebraska.
